Who Can Join?

Team Powderhorn is open to skiers of all ability levels who want to learn the skills for competing in ski racing events for people with physical or intellectual disabilities.

Team Powderhorn welcomes skiers:

  • with diagnosed intellectual or physical disabilities
  • who are at least 8 years old
  • who ski independently with minimal physical assistance
  • who want to ski race

What Do We Do?

Team Powderhorn provides ski race training for children and adults with disabilities. The program is for people who want to learn or improve their ski racing skills in Slalom (SL), Giant Slalom (GS), or Super Giant Slalom (SG). Team Powderhorn believes that the fundamental skiing skills are the most important steps in developing a ski racer. By setting up frequent, attainable goals with each athlete, Team Powderhorn can provide athletes with the skills to compete at USSA, U.S. Paralympics, or Special Olympics events as well as local town races. Team Powderhorn athletes enjoy the camaraderie of their fellow ski racers and sharing a training hill with Powderhorn Race Club. Our coaches ensure that the race learning experience is safe and fun. Most training takes place at the Team's home at Powderhorn Mountain Resort, with additional training opportunities at Copper Mountain Resort. Team Powderhorn has been providing race training at Powderhorn Mountain Resort since 2001 and is a program of Colorado Discover Ability.

Volunteers and Team Powderhorn

Team Powderhorn is powered by volunteers who donate their gifts of time, talent, and money to the Team. The 2016 season had 829 volunteer hours “on snow”. Financially, Team Powderhorn is made possible through the generosity of individuals, businesses and foundations. As a very efficient volunteer organization, we stretch your gift many times over and work hard at being good stewards of your gifts that make our volunteer work possible. Please consider supporting Team Powderhorn athletes and volunteers with a gift of cash, volunteering, or ski equipment.

Team Values: Sportsmanship, Integrity, Respect, and Accountability

At Team Powderhorn we expect our athletes to give their best effort in every practice and competition but it’s their racing spirit which counts above all else . It’s more important to us that athletes try their hardest than if they win. If they win without giving it their best effort, that win doesn’t mean much. But if they try their hardest and lose, they’ll still be proud of their effort and the team. Our athletes continue learning and improving every time they come out to practice sessions. Getting better is more important than whether or not they are better than others. They compete with themselves; if they get better than they used to be, then they are winning that competition. Families are the core strength of our program; we rely on their volunteerism, partnership, and support for our success.

The Power to Impact Lives

We appreciate the transformative power of sports that instill confidence, improve health, and inspire a sense of competition. Sports are great equalizers among people and disabilities fade away when the focus shifts on what people can do. Through the power of skiing, people discover new strengths and abilities, skills, and success.
