The Grand Valley offers many opportunities to enjoy outdoors. The increasing trails system opens up for any cycling enthusiast from beginner to competitive athlete. Cycling popularity has grown and with an array of adaptive bikes available, this activity can be a great equalizer for the disabled community.
Benefits include improvement in health and social aspect of community. Cycling can be done as an individual, group or family. Thanks to the US Paralympic Opportunity Fund, in 2013 we were able to purchase 10 new bikes for our program. The following year a grant from the National Recreation Foundation allowed us to augment this program by adding several adaptive bikes for children. And, in 2017, the Palisade Sunrise Rotary Club donated another children’s bike. All of the bikes can be adjusted and modified to fit an individual rider. There are adapted bikes for paraplegics, quadriplegics, amputees, vision impaired, cerebral palsy and so on. As each individual has different abilities, having an array of adaptions ensures that everyone will be able to enjoy the ride.
